Pirate Party Postponement

John and Nancy have decided to postpone the Pirate Party until next Saturday, the 28th, due to the high probability of thunderstorms this weekend.

Pirate Party on Saturday, July 21st

Ahoy and a hearty "argh" to all Southern Sailors,

Gather up your best pirate gear and head on over to Sunset Cove located on the west side of Lights Ferry Island (Marker 10TM) on Saturday, July 21st for the annual Pirate Party. Once again, John and Nancy Martin will be the Masters of Ceremonies for this fun event that will include pirate stories and a treasure hunt for the kids. Beer (Yuengling and Bud Lite), red and white wine, Shandys, fizzy water and soft drinks will be provided. Festivities will begin around 2:00 or thereabouts and hamburgers and hot dogs will be served around 6:00. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share and don't forget you lawn chairs.

There is no charge for this event for club members and $5/adult for guests. It is important to get an accurate head count so we can have enough food and drink without overbuying. A sign-up sheet has been e-mailed to everyone, so please submit one if you are planning on attending (thanks to those who have already done so).

Low Country Boil

Ahoy Southern Sailors,

Get out your "bibs" and prepare for Southern Sailing's Low Country Boil to be held on Saturday, May 5th at the pavilion at Aqualand Marina (just to the left of the entrance gate). The festivities will begin around 4:00 pm and the food should be ready to eat around 6:00. There will be beer (Yuengling and Bud Lite), boxed wine (red and white), fizzy water and soft drinks.

Bird Fleming and Daryl & Laura Greenberg will be the master cooks with an added Cajun touch courtesy of your commodore, John Schewe (actually a Yankee from New York, but a 26-year resident of New Orleans). So, bring your appetites and some camp chairs and don't miss the fun.

There is no charge for this event for current members. There will be a $5/adult charge for non-members (unless, that is, you pay your dues at the event).

There will be a sign-up sheet soon and it is really important that you let us know if you will be attending and how many in your party so we can order the proper amount of food.

2018 Chili Cook-off

Saturday, March 10th will be the annual SSC Chili Cook-off to be held at Sunrise Cove Clubhouse. Festivities will begin at 4:00 with tasting and judging starting at 6:00. Remember to bring a muffin tin as this is the best way to sample all the different chilies. Prizes for the three best chilies will be awarded.

Beer (Bud Lite and Yuengling regular), boxed red and white wines, soft drinks and fizzy water will be provided. There is no additional charge for this event.

This is also a good time to pay your annual dues. Now, you don't have to wait until then to do this - just go to the link on this site's Home Page (just above the Calendar) and you can pay on-line.

As we did last year we will be presenting the awards from 2017's racing events as well as this year's Belden Cup. Get your crews to join us in a wonderful evening of food and fellowship.

Annual Meeting and Lobster Bake Postponed

After much consideration and conversation, the SSC officers have decided to postpone the upcoming Lobster Bake & Annual Meeting. While this is regretful, we feel that it is in the best interest of the club.

Earlier in the year, due to a conflict with the venue, this event was pushed back from its originally scheduled date to a later date of December 2nd. It’s come to our attention through both the significantly lower number of attendees that have registered as well as general feedback that this new date does not work for many members. Given that this event serves as an imperative operations planning session and is the annual meeting of the club where we elect officers for the coming year, we’ve decided that postponing to a later date will accommodate more members’ attendance.

Given the current state of the club, I encourage all members to participate in this upcoming annual meeting. The board is looking to make recommendations on changes moving forward and will need your feedback/consent. Participation is dwindling, nominations for officer positions have dried up, and general enthusiasm seems to be at a low. In light of this, please send all constructive feedback and ideas so the board can take them into consideration before the next meeting.

For the next event, it will be held near the lake sometime in January. The venue will depend on the number of attendees. A Facebook and/or survey monkey survey will go out to decide which date accommodates the most members. The plan is for all officers to retain their posts until this meeting.

Those that have already registered for the lobster bake, rest assured that you will be fully refunded.

ANNUAL MEETING AND LOBSTER BAKE - DECEMBER 2, 2017

Where: Sunrise Cove Marina

When:  4:00 PM Annual meeting followed by cocktail hour/watching lobsters cook. 

Cost:  

  • $30 Lobster Dinner (includes one lobster, mussels, bread, sides, beer, wine, etc)
  • $15 Non-lobster Dinner (includes all of the above except lobster)
  • $15 Extra Lobster
  • $0.00 Kids meal (no lobster, obviously)

What to bring:

  • Appetizer/dessert to share
  • Lobster/crab crackers
  • Bib :) 
  • Your choice of liquor, if that’s your thing

What NOT to bring:

  • Dogs.  Seriously, folks. This has been an issue in years past and I can get into more details if I must, but bottom line, If I’m leaving mine at home you can leave yours home/on the boat too.

LOVE THE LAKE REGATTA SEPTEMBER 8-10, 2017

Join us for our 3rd annual Love the Lake Regatta. A fundraiser to support the important work of the Chattahoochee River Keeper, whose mission is to promote and protect the Chattahoochee River while preserving the ecological health for the people and wildlife that depend on the river system. 

This three day even will kick off at Sunrise Cove Marina in Gainesville the weekend of Sept 8-10, with the skippers meeting taking place Friday following check-in and social hour. Racing begins on Saturday morning at 11am. While the competitors race around the lake, a shoreline cleanup will take place for canoers, kayakers, paddlers and hikers. 

A dinner for racers and River Keeper supporters will follow the day’s races, with happy hour beginning at 5:30pm. Don’t miss the live music and dancing that will begin at 8pm. The evening will even include a silent auction and several raffles to raise funds for the Chattahoochee River Keeper. 

Sunday brings another day of racing, with social hour and cookout at 2pm, followed by door prizes and an awards ceremony.

Paella!!

Saturday April 22nd - Annual Paella Party

Come join fellow SSC members for the annual Paella Party, Saturday, April 22, 2016, at Aqualand Marina. We have reserved the LOWER pavilion (the upper pavilion was already reserved) from noon till late for this traditional feast. Most members will begin to gather about 4pm but come anytime. Depending on the chef’s schedule, we normally plan to eat anytime between 6:30 – 7:30. 

This is a “rain or shine” event. 

Nourishing, vibrant, and without pretension, paella has held a place of honor and practicality in Spanish homes for centuries. To prepare paella, combine water, saffron, and broth in a large saucepan. ... Stir in herb blend, broth mixture, chicken, pork, add peas and just before serving add calamari, shrimp and mussels. Add a glass of sangria and it is a dinner not to be forgotten.

In the SSC tradition, place the following on your “to bring” list: 

•Dessert or appetizer to share

•Chair (the picnic table benches can be really hard)

•Membership Dues if you have not paid

There is no charge for members and their family for the paella. Visitors will be charged $5.00. If a visitor joins SSC, the entire family will eat without any charge.

Saturday, March 4, 2017, the annual SSC Chili-off will be held at Sunrise Cove Clubhouse

As we did last year we will also be presenting the awards from all last year's fantastic racing events plus the Belden Cup. Get your crews to join us in a wonderful evening of food and fellowship.

The chili judging will be at 6:30 so please have your chili at the clubhouse by 6:00pm. Bring a ladle for serving and a muffin tin is the perfect way to enjoy the many different chilies.  Any additional power strips will be welcome.
