This past Saturday saw the successful completion of race one of the
BFSC Moonlight Scrambler/SSC Firefly race, hosted by Barefoot. The event was originally scheduled for weekend before last, but the scorching heat and the thick, still air prompted a decision to postpone for a week. That was a good plan. There were nine boats to register and compete for the coveted Firefly perpetual trophy. At the 8:00 pm start time, the breeze had filled in enough to get the fleets off and running. The course was from X-p, H- s, B-s, X-p, T-p, X-s Fin, with a 10:00 pm short finish at X and an 11:00 pm motor-time. All boats made it around “H” but the breeze began to fade on the trip back to “B”, not enough to stop the fleets, but enough to exercise the patience of skipper and crew. Ultimately, the Short Finish alarm chimed as the lead boats rounded “B” for the downhill run to “X”. Racing would stop there. Most made it, but a small number did not make the motor-time and had to bail. Remember, the final race in the series is scheduled for Saturday, July 28th. SSC will be hosting this time. Details are forthcoming, but boats should plan to attend, if for no other reason than to go for a nice night sail in good company. In addition, yes, a well-lit moon will attend. It will be patiently awaiting you as the Sun goes down. |
