2008 Cruising Events: DON'T FORGET TO POST YOUR PICTURES.

Priate Party! August 2. Pirate John has a new map. He says the booty is located on Skull Island in lost anchor cove. We'll have more information as the date gets closer. I can't believe there is another treasure on Lake Lanier!

Wow! Thanks go out to Mike Powell for his outstanding wine tasting and Marcio for feeding us his great carna asada! The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well at Southern Sailing Club. Thanks go out to all who helped make it work so smoothly.

Several of the members even woke up at the crack of dawn to practice their anchor retrieval skills. That's dedication.

See you at the pirate party Aug. 2!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The raft up will be in a cove near 4FB or go to the lighthouse and take a right. The wine tasting will take place around 5pm and we'll eat carna asada around 7pm. The wine tasting is 10$ and the meal is 5$ and bring a dish to share. If you opt out of the wine and food come by and visit anyway. Questions - call 770-855-6179.

Things get busy in the summer. Mark your calendar now for July 12 and Aug. 2 (the pirate party).

See you there!

Wine under Sail
Southern Sailing Club

Wine is like wind, it gives movement to our spirits as we move through life.

Sauvignon Blanc
Riesling
Chardonnay
Zinfandel
Shiraz
Petite Syrah

No pretense, we will talk about wine as it might be enjoyed, not how we might impress others. Some tips on buying, storing and most importantly, drinking.

July 12 will be out next event. Mike Powell (the professor) has agreeded to conduct a wine tasting. He's bring a variety of wines and will discuss each. If wine is your thing this will not only be tasty but also informative. The club will also provide some beer, water, and juice boxes for the kids.

It's a go for the carna asada! We're so lucky to have so much authentic food. The plans are firming up nicely. I'd also like to have a movie if possible. Anybody have what it takes?

The location will be announced at a later date. Let me know if you have a good location. I'll update the page as plans firm up. We will ask for donations to cover the cost of the wine and meal. It's important that I get accurate numbers of people for each event so that we can keep the cost down. It's important to keep the dues at a very reasonable $50.

Paella Party

Karen did it again! Thanks to her for not only feeding the clan but also giving so much of her time and energy. The food was great and the sangria good, cold, and plentiful.

Thanks go out to all the people who helped make this such a successful event! We had a great fire building crew, helpers for Karen during the cooking (hot, hot, hot), clean up, providing ice, tables and some really good music. I would have to list everybody at the party to thank. Southern Sailors come together and do what needs to be done. It makes my job easy.

A great time was had by all!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What: Paella Party. We'll also provide some water and juice for the kids and sangria to go with the paella.

Where: Island 42 or Flat Creek just north of Sunrise Marina. Monitor VHF 78 and check in when you arrive for raft up. Please listen to the harbormaster. His/her job is to help arrange boats safely as possible to minimize accidents and boats swinging into each other. If you don't have a dinghy let us know. Someone will help you safely ashore.

When: June 7 we'll start gathering all day for a great meal at 7pm. The end is up to you. Most cruisers raft up and spend the night.

Who: everybody! Feel welcome to bring friends and family to enjoy the evening. We ask for a $5 donation per person. The grill will hot if you want to throw some hot dogs on for the kids.

How: RSVP by May 31 and let me know how many kids and adults will be eating. In the subject area say paella party.

What to bring: Chairs for the beach, trash bag for cruise in trash out, any special drinks, and a dish to share. It's what ever you need on the beach.

Request for volunteers: We will need people to bring tables and 2 - 10lb. bags of ice (we will reimburse you upon arrival). I need to know in advance if you can help out.

See you at the beach!

Thanks to John Martin I was put in touch with Jim Jordan of the US Power Squadron. They are going to be at the paella party to conduct safety inspections. They don't issue tickets and don't report deficiency's. They do offer some great information and if you pass your insurance company will probably give you a discount. The inspection takes about 20 minutes. Jim says that you can also do a dock side inspection. His contact e-mail is xo@usps-atlanta.org

Let him know if you're interested in the inspection at the paella party or a dock side inspection. The owner on the registration must be present.

A detailed list is at http://safetyseal.net/what_is_vsc.asp . This is a great opportunity to know that you are in compliance with regulations. (avoid a ticket). They are willing to come to all the cruising events to ensure everyone has the opportunity.

We'll be having this event on Island 42 this year. When approacing the raft up contact the club on VHS 78 for instructions.

On June 7th we will gather for our first cruising event. Come join us for an evening of great food and even better company. Most of the members raft us and spend the night. We'll monitor 78 for information when rafting up.

Please RSVP by May 31 so that we can make sure and have enough food.

What to bring.... dish to share, chairs, dogs, kids and special drinks. This year we're starting "cruise in trash out". In the spirit of it we're asking everybody to bring a trash bag with and fill it up.

We'll also need volunteers to help with rides, tables, set up, breakdown and anything else I haven't thought of. If anybody can bring a boom box let me know.

Get your cruising groove on and we'll see you there!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please take note that we will monitor 78 this year. Old 68 has interference.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our cruising event dates have been set and we're looking forward to some great raftups! If you have any ideas (new or used) for activities please let me know. Any interest in volley ball? Horseshoes? Let me know. Southern Sailors know how to do a party.

Let’s face it, cruising is fun. There are no loud blasts or countdowns around X mark. No stressed out captains yelling “Come up! Come up!” No frozen fingers or toes on frigid Saturdays in January. If you feel like spending time with friends on the lake, you come to the Cruising Events. There is no obligation to finish a series, no points for the Club or stress about breaking your boat on a windy day. This is CRUISING!

Check out our local cruising events on the Cruising Calendar.
